Spencer is Walking

Spencer is up and walking 8 days after the accident. He even tried walking up and down a couple stairs! If he can get his pain under control, he is hoping to head home in the next couple days and start therapy. Just in time for Thanksgiving.

If you are in Iowa City tonight, some of Spencer’s fellow climbers are hosting an event at Orchard Green from 7:30 to 10:30. Stop by if you are around to grab a drink. Proceeds will be donated to the The Access Fund in Spencer’s honor.

The Access Fund is the national advocacy organization that keeps U.S. climbing areas open and conserves the climbing environment. Founded in 1991, the Access Fund supports and represents over 2.3 million climbers nationwide in all forms of climbing: rock, ice, mountaineering, and bouldering.

    Spencer,

Today I worked out at the Rec and the first thing I did was check out the wall. I looked up and just imagined what the fall was like. I’m amazed. Shocked. And truly stunned on how you are okay. I then walked up to the 3rd floor at the rec and that’s when it really hit me. I look down and just imagined myself falling. It’s was sickening to put myself in that position. Even if you go down to the 2nd floor to imagine falling is still sickening. I just wanted to say you’re a champ. Every superhero should salute to you. So glad you’re okay.

I wish you and your family a happy, happy thanksgiving.

Hi Spencer, just a note to wish you well. I thank God your injuries weren’t worse! I’m 52 years old and on October 26, 2012, I also fell from a climbing wall in Reno, NV. I have a fractured pelvis, very bad broken ankle, broken rib, and broken finger. I’m still in a wheelchair, hoping I’ll be able to start walking again next week. I think (not confirmed) I’m the third person to fall here in Reno. Well, take care!
